Two Year Memorable Anniversary: Forced Eviction of Dey Krahorm Community

Sufferance of Dey Krahorm People

On January 24, 2009, 144 house owners and their families from Dey Krahorm community were violently and cruelly evicted by Phnom Penh Municipality forces and 500 paid workers employed by 7NG Company to grab the land from Dey Krahorm community.

Up until today, these residents of Dey Krahorm community were forced to accept a house in Damnak Troyeung village, Choam Chao commune, Dangkor district that the 7NG company orgaized for them. Nowaday, most of Dey Krahorm residents are not living there, their houses are left locked. Some of the families have come back to rent houses in Phnom Penh, and some sold their house and are now looking for new place to live. This is because the relocation site is far away from employment, they cannot afford to connect to elecricity, there is no access to public services, far away from school for their children, no clean water system, no drainage system, and no safety and security ... etc.

Additionally, over 20 families of Dey Krahorm residents haven't received a place at the relocation site or compensation yet. The 7NG company still doesn't agree to solve this problem and doesn't express a reason.

Another 400 families who are former renters of Dey Krahorm community and market stall owners are now living in a very difficult and miserable situation under ragged tarpulins near Udong Mountain, Kampong Speu Province, where they were dumped by the 7NG Company. Especially the children; many children are infected with viruses because there aren't any clean water, health center, food, and sanitation.

Thus, on January 24, 2011, the former residents of Dey Krahorm have met together to remember this horrible event in order to show their concerns and pains during and after forced eviction.

We suggest the government to stop all eviction activities that affect people's lives, especially their physical, mental and spiritual health.
